An Untold Black American Perspective

Looking at Segregation and Leadership Through a Different Lens...

Through My Father’s Eye is an untold black American perspective about life from the segregated times in the 1950’s through post segregated America into modern day.  This documentary film is based on, and contains, hours of actual footage filmed by James Coursey Sr. over two decades of his life.

An Incredible Man & Leader

James himself inspired the message in this film as he was a black man who didn’t let race, education, or personal tragedy affect his journey to become a black business owner in segregated America, the first black town commissioner of Denton, MD, and then on to become the first black Mayor of Denton as well.

He faced many tragedies in his life: losing one of his eyes as a teenager, the death of one of his young children, having been burned over 70% of his body in a work-related accident, and his business accidently burning down. However, he didn’t let these hardships affect his success as a person, as a community leader, and as a role model to hundreds of people in his community.

Mission of Our Film: Through My Father's Eye

The mission of creating and producing this film is to remind us that the values that create great societies and cultures are immutable, they just need to be translated into each generation's understanding and perspective.

Additionally, to raise money through the distribution of this film to create The Father's Eye Foundation, a charity focusing on increasing the educational and cultural development of at-risk kids and adults.

The Leadership Crisis in America

We are losing our mentors...

In the past decade, the number of American households with children increased by approximately 160,000.  The number of 2 parent homes decreased by 1.2 million.  Today 15 million children are being raised without a father, and another 5 million are being raised without a mother. - (Washington Times & Lifesitenews.com).  These numbers are expecting to soar in the future.  Daily drug overdoses on heroin are soaring in every city in America, creating more single-parent homes and in many cases creating thousands of zero parent homes.  Today many people think the drug-related issues mentioned above are the crisis.  Those issues are just the “earthquake; ” the “Tsunami” is yet to come.  The “Tsunami” being, the millions of children and young adults being left with no parents to guide or help them grow into productive adults capable of leading in the current and future times.

Our ultimate goal is to raise money to establish a leadership academy where every child or young adult can have the opportunity to develop their leadership abilities and learn the values that create thriving adult community members regardless of race, background, or money.  Our first step is to distribute our film and then use our film as a fundraising mechanism to raise money to establish our academy.
